Eligibility Criteria (as per guidelines)

Educational qualification

A candidate is eligible as Law Clerk if he/she:

  1. Holds a Degree in Law from a recognised University, having studied either:
    • a 5-year regular integrated law stream after 10+2, or
    • a regular curriculum degree course after 10+2 followed by a 3-year regular law degree from a University / affiliated college.
  2. Has passed the Degree in Law within 2 years immediately preceding the date of the selection notification.
  3. Is not pursuing any other regular course of study, profession or occupation that requires absence from the place of work during the Law Clerk engagement.
  4. If enrolled as an Advocate, shall suspend practice before joining and keep it suspended till demitting Law Clerkship.

Proviso: Candidates studying in the fifth year of the 5-year integrated law course or the third year of the 3-year law course may also apply, subject to proof of acquiring the law qualification before taking up the assignment.

Age limit

  • Must not have attained 30 years as on 1st January / 1st July preceding the last date fixed for submission of applications.
  • Must be a citizen of India.
  • The Hon’ble Chief Justice may relax or prescribe criteria as per Guideline 16.

Period of assignment

  • Normally one year from the date of assignment.
  • May be extended with Chief Justice approval for a further period not exceeding four years in aggregate under the guidelines.
  • May be discontinued earlier without notice if services are unsatisfactory.
  • Law Clerk is not treated as an employee of High Court Service or Judicial/Ministerial Service.
