Who can apply

Trades Minimum qualification
30 ITI trades (rows 1–30) Class 10 with 50% aggregate and ITI with 50% (consolidated, all semesters) in the matching trade, NCVT or SCVT
Crane Operator Overhead (SI) Class 10 with 50% aggregate
Rigger Class 8 with 50% aggregate
  • Age: no upper limit. The minimum is 14 years for non-hazardous trades and 18 years for hazardous trades, on the closing date. Your Class 10 certificate is proof of birth date. If it doesn’t show one, use a birth certificate. Rigger applicants without a Class 10 certificate use a birth certificate.
  • Matching NCVT trades also count. The notice’s example: a Turner or Tool and Die Maker NCVT certificate holder can apply for Machinist. Check Schedule I of the Apprenticeship Rules for your trade.
  • More than one trade: you can choose more than one trade in the same application. If two exams fall in the same shift, you can sit only one.
  • Already an apprentice elsewhere? Your current apprenticeship contract must be terminated on the MSDE portal before you apply, and any cooling-off period must be over.
  • Grade points: if your board gives grade points, convert them to percentage using the board’s official chart. If you don’t, the lowest percentage for that grade will be used.

How selection works

  1. Shortlisting at 1:25. For each trade and category, up to 25 candidates per seat are called for the exam. Merit is 50% Class 10 marks + 50% ITI marks, except Crane Operator (100% Class 10) and Rigger (100% Class 8).
  2. Written exam (details below). If marks are equal, the older candidate ranks higher, then alphabetical order of first name.
  3. Document verification at the Dockyard Apprentice School. Dates for verification and joining are emailed.
  4. Medical fitness certificate from a Government hospital, as per the Apprenticeship Rules.

Applications are not checked in detail before the exam, so your candidature is provisional until document verification. A wrong claim found at that stage means cancellation.

Points to check in the notice

  • The heading reads “(LEGALLY INVALID)”. Under the title, the Employment News print shows “ENROLMENT FOR APPRENTICESHIP TRAINING IN DESIGNATED TRADES (IT-28) (LEGALLY INVALID)”. This looks like a printing error. The rest of the advertisement is a normal enrolment notice. Check the notice on apprenticeshipregistration.com, and call or email the helpdesk if you’re unsure.
  • The helpdesk number has only 9 digits. It is printed as “971842361”, which is one digit short of a mobile number, so it is likely a misprint. Use the email given in the notice if the number doesn’t work.
  • The dates are our calculation from the notice’s “fifth day / 21st day” rule. Follow the portal if it shows different dates.

Contact and official sources

  • Apply and admit card: apprenticeshipregistration.com (instructions, PwBD certificate format and reference documents are also on this portal)
  • Grievances: email supportnaval28@gmail.com, as printed in the notice. Queries on the eligible or final merit list must be sent within 7 days of the list being uploaded.
  • Source: Naval Dockyard, Mumbai advertisement, Employment News, 3–9 October 2026, pages 16–21.

The notice ends with a caution: selection is purely on merit, and no money should be paid to anyone who promises a seat.

Also open now: the Naval Dockyard Karwar and Naval Aircraft Yard Goa apprentice 2027 enrolment (210 seats).
