Since 1 July 2026, a normal 36-page passport costs Rs 2,500 to get or renew, and a 60-page passport costs Rs 3,500. That is Rs 1,000 and Rs 1,500 more than before. Tatkal and a lost passport push the bill higher, and the table below shows by how much. Both sizes are valid for 10 years.

The Tatkal and lost-passport figures are the totals reported when the revised fees took effect, and the Tatkal total matches the Rs 2,500 extra in the form booklet. The minor fee is from the booklet. Other services, such as a Police Clearance Certificate, have their own fees, which the calculator shows.
What this means in practice
Which size? The 60-page passport costs Rs 1,000 more for the same 10 years. If you travel little, the 36-page one is enough. Frequent travellers who fill pages with visas and stamps may prefer 60 pages. The extra Rs 1,000 buys 24 more pages.
Cost per year of validity:
- 36 pages: Rs 2,500 over 10 years, which is Rs 250 a year
- 60 pages: Rs 3,500 over 10 years, which is Rs 350 a year

A loss is the most expensive way to be in a hurry. If it is stolen and you also need it urgently, check with the calculator, because the pages I could read do not give a combined figure.
Paying
- Online: the fee FAQ lists credit and debit cards (Mastercard and Visa), internet banking (SBI and other banks) and the SBI wallet.
- In person: a walk-in applicant at a Passport Seva Kendra can pay cash.
- Validity of a payment: one year from the day you pay, or from your first appointment date if you have booked one.
- Failed payment, money deducted: check Track Payment Status the next business day. SBI refunds failed payments within seven working days, and the FAQ gives customercare.00691@sbi.co.in and 011-41561114 for follow-up.
- Too much paid: the Regional Passport Office handles the refund.
One thing the pages do not say
I could not find any statement on what applies to a payment made, or an appointment booked, before 1 July 2026. If you paid at the old rate and your appointment falls after the change, ask Passport Seva on 1800-258-1800 or the grievance page before paying anything extra.
